Fragments of interview with former Bento Rodrigues resident Marcos Muniz (Marquinhos), research archive of the ongoing project "The contaminated soil is also our feet" by Silvia Noronha, Bento Rodrigues, March 2023.
Marcos Muniz is part of the group "Loucos por Bento". Since 2016, the group of former residents occupies the contaminated city of Bento Rodrigues. They fight for the right to remain in their territory, where, despite the ruins and pollution, they feel rooted. The group occupies and cares for the site and meets to celebrate religious festivities, weddings, parties and other events, in addition to planning the construction of a mining memorial on the site.
explanatory notes on the video:
01_ at minute 1:33 a glass appears balanced on the table. This happened while we were having lunch, Marquinho simply placed the glass of cachaça (the region's traditional alcoholic drink) on the table in this way. There's not much explanation for this, but it somehow made me understand that these super-people have the incredible force to achieve what seems impossible.
02_about the end of the movie (contains irony) - Marquinhos invites me to have coffee at his house, his house was destroyed in 2015 in the environmental crime, later its ruins were flooded by the construction of the DIQUE (solution proposed by the company as an alternative to retain the waste after the tragedy). This was a great trauma for him and a double loss, as his house was destroyed by crime in 2015 and the following year the ruins were drowned by the same company.
